Meet your San Diego makeup artist…our exclusive partner XO Beauty Co! We’re excited to have Alexis join our boudoir team to make you gorgeous + camera-ready. While she glams clients up for many different occasions, we love how she makes you look + feel for your boudoir photoshoot with her consistency in style and making sure you have an unforgettable experience. So you can get to know her a little more, here are some fun insights to her creativity + attention to detail::
Q: How long have you been a make-up artist/hair stylist? What is your background?
I have been doing hair and makeup professionally for over 15 years. I started working at a salon while also working full time at M.A.C as I began to build my clientele. I fell into the bridal industry in 2008 when the recession hit. I was looking for ways to fill my books, and started doing bridal hair and makeup. I absolutely fell in love with it. Now 90% of my business comes from event hair and makeup, while the other 10% of my business is doing hair color and cuts at a salon.
Q: Now that you’re doing what you love, what inspires your work?
Fashion, art, nature. I love learning new trends and looking to fashion to give inspiration to the latest trends for hair and makeup.
Q: For boudoir photo shoots, how long do typical make-up/hair sessions last?
From start to finish (including set up and clean up) my sessions take about 3 hours.
Q: Are all make-ups created equal? What is “photo-friendly” make-up? How do you address a client’s “problem” areas, if any?
No. All MU is definitely not created equally. For example Bridal MU is very distinct from boudoir hair and makeup. In Bridal makeup our goal is to give a natural soft glam, while with boudoir we can be a little more dramatic and racey. Our goal with any makeup application however is to not only look good in a photo, but also to look and feel beautiful in person. If there are any problem areas such as acne or large pores, our goal is to minimize that with different products and techniques.
Q: How easy or difficult is it to modify one’s make-up during a boudoir photo-shoot?
If you want to do multiple looks in a boudoir shoot, I like to start softer and build into more drama as we go.
Q: What other occasions do you provide make-up/hair services for?
You name it, we do it. Bridal, special event, branding, photoshoots, corporate events and headshots, makeup lessons training, bachelorette parties, maternity just to name a few.
Q: How do make-up styles differ between boudoir photography and other occasions?
To me, Boudoir is the one hair and makeup session where you can go FULL OUT. It is common in those sessions to have an intense glam with dark smokey eyes, lashes, and a red lip. I think most of the time it’s hard to find a place where that style of makeup is appropriate other than a night out on the town. I love it for that reason. There are no limits to it, whereas Bridal makeup is light and airy, and very seldom where you find a bride who wants a red lip.
Q: What are five things people may not know about you?
1). I am surrounded by boys. I am the only girl with four brothers, I married a man who has two brothers and I have two sons.
2). I owned a salon for 5 years.
3). I love cappuccinos and cute coffee shops. I would give up wine over coffee.
4). Pink and sparkles are my favorite colors.
5). I love to travel and explore new places.
Q: Why do you like working with Shannon / Studio Carre / Our Studio?
She’s professional, and EXTREMELY talented. I myself used her for my own boudoir session when I was getting married, and LOVED my photos. She makes you feel confident, beautiful and most importantly helps to give direction with poses. To me that is huge because being photographed can sometimes be an uncomfortable thing (especially with boudoir), but she makes you feel beautiful, and is such a pleasure to work with!
Welcome to the team Alexis! We’re excited to work with you!!
